SGS housing queue

SGS Studentbostäder (Stiftelsen Göteborgs Studentbostäder) owns and lets 8,541 student homes in Gothenburg. They also let parking spaces, garages and charging spots: anyone can apply, but tenants have priority. International students via the universities (CIS and ISMO) have their own rules. Registering is free. There is no annual fee. You can join the queue from the year you turn 17, even if you only plan to start studying.

The queue runs on points. You earn one point for each day you are in it. Ordinary student homes are published on Mondays and Thursdays, interest is open for three days and you can have at most three applications at a time. The viewing offer goes automatically to the five applicants with the most points. The tenancy goes to whoever among them has accepted, uploaded the right documents and passed a credit check. Membership of a student union at the University of Gothenburg or Chalmers gives three months of extra queue points, but only once. The points count from the day you join. That is why registering early is worthwhile, even before you start looking.

SGS Studentbostäder publish no average queue time. How long it takes depends on the size of the home, the area and how many applicants with more points apply for the same one. To keep your points you need to log in at least once every twelve months. If you miss signing an offered contract within four days it is cancelled and your queue time is reset. If you decline you are blocked for seven days; if you do not reply at all, for 30 days. To rent you must study at least 15 ECTS credits per term on site at the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers or Linnaeus University in Gothenburg. Distance learning is not accepted. You can live there for at most six years, plus up to four more as a doctoral student.
