About Bostaden Umeå
Alongside ordinary rentals, Bostaden lets 2,358 student apartments and 2,181 single rooms, youth apartments for anyone aged 18-25 and senior apartments from 60 with no children still at home. They also let parking spaces and storage. Everything is applied for through the same housing queue, and registering is free. There is no annual fee.
The queue runs on points. You earn one point per day you are in the queue, and the points are personal. When a home falls vacant you register interest, and among the applicants who meet the letting policy, the eight with the most points get an offer to view. It is not a municipal housing agency with a numbered place, but the points count from the day you join. That is why registering early is worthwhile, even before you start looking.
Bostaden publish no average queue time. How long it takes depends on the area, the size of the home and how many applicants with more points apply for the same one. To keep your points you need to log in at least once every twelve months, or the page is deactivated. If you create a new page within a year of going inactive you get the points back; after more than a year the data is deleted and the points cannot be restored. When you sign a contract on an ordinary rental or a senior apartment the points reset. Student housing is the exception: you keep the points.
